Can you tell something about yourself?

My name is Rick Rijnierse, I’m 23 years old, and I recently completed my first year at Thales. I studied IT Infrastructure Design & Security at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle, where I also did my graduation internship at Thales. During my internship, I had the opportunity to work in the CMS INFRA department, focusing on securely visualizing security logs in an air-gapped cloud-native environment. Outside of work, I enjoy socializing with friends and working out.

What does/did your internship/graduation assignment/job involve?

Currently, I work as a Security Engineer at CMS INFRA, where my primary focus is on securing and auditing INFRA products to ensure they meet security standards and are compliant with hardening protocols. I also perform integration-level testing to check if new vulnerabilities arise and if misconfigurations occurred in the hardening.

Can you describe a workweek @ Thales?

My workweeks vary. Since I live in Zwolle, I usually go into the office three days a week and work from home on the other two days, depending on my schedule. I prefer attending meetings in person at the office rather than virtually through Jabber, so I adjust my days accordingly.

Task-wise, my weeks are also quite unpredictable. Some weeks, I work on a single project, while other weeks are filled with smaller tasks or support spread throughout the week. However, one thing is certain: I’m never bored!

How do you experience the work culture @ Thales?

I experience the work culture at Thales as very positive. There is a strong emphasis on professionalism and results, and as long as you deliver quality work, you have the freedom to decide how to approach your tasks. There is no strict hierarchy or micromanagement, where your every move is monitored.

What do you like most about the work culture @ Thales?

The freedom and the responsibilities.

What ambitions do you have career-wise?

My ambition is to become a Security Architect within CMS INFRA, where I can collaborate with other architects to brainstorm secure solutions and incorporate security into every phase of the design process.

What about activities for young professionals at Thales?

Thales has a lot to offer for younger employees. We have a Young Employee Society (YES) that organizes activities, lectures, BBQs, and social events every few weeks. It’s a great way to meet people and network, especially if you’re new to the company.
